Need for Safety in Automotive Applications is Paving the way for DSRC Systems

Published By: IndustryARC Published On : 19-Oct-2017

Safety plays a crucial role in the road transportation systems. According to the U.S. DOT National Transportation Statistics, 34,414 people died as of year 2011 and more than 2.2 million people were injured due to traffic fatalities.  Reasons for such incidents include distracted driving, speeding, weather conditions like snow and fog, unawareness of the user regarding the other vehicles or the pedestrians. Another reason that is increasing traffic fatalities is the growth of vehicles on highways owing to a revolution across different dimensions of comfortable living. Increase in population is also one of the reasons for the rise in number of vehicles, resulting to more demand for travel, thereby leading to traffic congestion, delays among others. Other vertical that is impacted due to transportation sectors are  climatic variations that results to higher average temperature and frequent change of weather among others. As of year 2012, transportation sector is the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions contributing 28% of the overall greenhouse emission in the United States. DSRC technology can reduce the greenhouse effect by updating driver about the traffic congestion and many more.

In order to improve safety in highways, the vehicle requires communication and frequent updates of nearby vehicles. Dedicated short range communication (DSRC) is a communication technology that is having high speed wireless communication between vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure. It provides low latency and high reliability as compared to other communication technologies that serves great advantage of transmitting data in shorter span of time. Hence, DSRC technology with a goal of providing safety applications ensures to provide all such features in order to have a safer transportation.

Safety applications in the DSRC includes blind spot warnings, forward collision warnings, sudden breaking ahead warnings, approaching emergency vehicle warning, do not pass warnings, intersection collision avoidance, movement assistance, vehicle safety inspection, traffic and travel condition data, thus improving the efficiency of V2V communication. Greater margins of highway safety, reduced traffic congestion and vehicle emissions among others are also achieved by utilizing communication technologies in road transportation.
