Herbicides are chemical compounds
that are used to manipulate or control undesirable vegetation and destroy unwanted plants (terrestrial or aquatic) called weeds. The most frequent application of herbicides occurs in row-crop farming, where they are used before or during planting to maximize crop productivity by minimizing other vegetation. They also may be applied to crops which are under fall in order to improve harvesting. Herbicides are used in forest management to prepare logged areas for replanting. In suburban and urban areas, herbicides are applied to lawns, parks, golf courses and other areas. Herbicides are also used in water bodies to control aquatic weeds that impede irrigation withdrawals or interfere with industrial and recreational uses of water.
Herbicides fall into two broad categories: inorganic (e.g., copper sulfate, sodium chlorate, and sodium arsenide) and organic (e.g., chlorophenoxy compounds, dinitrophenols, bipyridyl compounds, carbonates, and amide herbicides). Historically, inorganic compounds were the first available and the first used. There has been over a long continuous effort to develop herbicide compounds that are more selective—that affect weeds, as opposed to desirable plants.
Herbicides are used to control growth of weeds on various crop types including cereals & grains, oilseeds & pulses, fruits & vegetables, and other crop types.
The use of herbicides is increasing day by day. This is because any other alternative control measures do not provide an effective and economic substitute for herbicides in many situations. The efficiency and safety of herbicides are greatly influenced by soil and climate.
Using herbicides has many benefits including crop protection both in pre-harvesting crop growth and post harvesting storage. The global herbicides market
has been studied in detail in this report. The market has been divided into nine segments and each segment is further divided into sub-segments to provide a detailed analysis of the market. The major market segments include herbicides by type, by crop type, by non-crop based, by mechanism of action, by molecular structure, by mobility, by method of application, by mode of action and by time of application. Herbicides market by geography has also been included in the report. This segment comprises of Americas, Europe, APAC and RoW.
The global herbicides market was $XX Million in 2015 and is expected to grow during the forecasted period from 2016 to 2021. The herbicides market is mainly driven by the limited availability of arable land, high profitability margin, acceptance of modern farming and protected agriculture, and changes in farming practices and technology. To capitalize on the growth trend in the global market, several leading companies are investing in the development and manufacturing sectors. The growing demand for these products from different parts of the world is compelling global players to add herbicides to their product offerings. Latin America and Asia-Pacific are the top two consumers of this industry. Latin America is the fastest growing country in revenue.
However, many European countries are banning the application of synthetic herbicides, for example in 2015 Germany, France and Switzerland joined the global glyphosate banning movement for herbicides. Moreover, health professionals in Brazil and Argentina are also filing new petitions for banning herbicide based products in their domestic markets. The herbicide banning movement in Europe will hamper the market growth in this segment.Herbicides As Cheap & Effective Weed Control
There are multiple evidences in the agricultural literature stating that herbicides are generally more effective and less expensive than other methods of weed control. The advantages of herbicides are greatest in temperate areas with cool and moist summers, and mild winters which support the year-round weed growth. Moist soil conditions and high humidity also reduce the value of cultivation; thus controlling weeds by speeding up the microbial degradation is important.
