Herbicides are chemical compounds
that are used to manipulate or control undesirable vegetation and destroy unwanted plants (terrestrial or aquatic) called weeds. The most frequent application of herbicides occurs in row-crop farming, where they are used before or during planting to maximize crop productivity by minimizing other vegetation. They also may be applied to crops which are under fall in order to improve harvesting. Herbicides are used in forest management to prepare logged areas for replanting. Herbicides fall into two broad categories: inorganic (e.g., copper sulfate, sodium chlorate, and sodium arsenide) and organic (e.g., chlorophenoxy compounds, dinitrophenols, bipyridyl compounds, carbonates, and amide herbicides). Historically, inorganic compounds were the first available and the first used. There has been over a long continuous effort to develop herbicide compounds that are more selective—that affect weeds, as opposed to desirable plants.
