Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) is smaller wavelength technology that uses reflected and emitted light which offers enhanced image resolution. Owing to the huge scope for their use in various kinds of applications, there is a growing demand for Infrared (IR) detectors. IR detectors can be classified on the basis of their spectral range. Short wave infrared (SWIR) falls in the range of 1µm – 4 µm. SWIR has generated much attention in the recent years with new applications and mission developments. Advancements in the SWIR sensors and infrared focal plane array technologies have been the primary growth drivers for the SWIR market specifically in areas such as conventional surveillance imaging, as well as advancements in hyperspectral imaging applications.
Short wave infrared detectors have the advantage of detecting the presence of objects in low light and completely dark environments. This makes them very well suited for applications such as military, surveillance and so on. SWIR imaging also has the added benefit of low power consumption. Another application of SWIR detects are for the use of temperature measurement and hence can also be used for detection of fire.

The availability of alternative options in CMOS and CCD based devices proves to be highly competitive for the SWIR market. Additionally, government regulations coupled with the high cost of materials are inhibiting the growth of this market. In the U.S., particularly, International Traffic in Arms (ITAR) requirements are imposed on companies manufacturing SWIR cameras. In the case of manufacturing setups, SWIR detectors can be used to identify irregularities, if any, that can otherwise not be detected by the naked eye.

The global market for Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) can be segmented on the basis of materials Indium Gallium Arsenide, Mercury Cadmium Telluride, Indium Antimonide, Lead Sulfide and Others. On the basis of technology the market is classified into cooled and uncooled. Based on the scanning type SWIR market is classified into area scan and line scan. Applications of SWIR are segmented into machine vision, thermal imaging, hyperspectral imaging, surveillance systems, vehicle Navigation, material Processing and others. In terms of end-user, the Short Wave Infrared market has been segmented across the following Manufacturing, Agriculture, Commercial, Automotive, Medical, Semiconductors, Aerospace and Defense and Others.
