Metolachlor was synthesized by Ciba-Geigy Limited in 1972 and was registered in 1977.  Metolachlor is a colorless and odourless liquid organic compound belonging to the family of the chloroacetanilide herbicide chemicals. Metolachlor is derived through condensation of 2-ethyl-6-methylaniline with methoxyacetone and is applied through ground application for the entire agricultural site, however it is also applied through aerial, chemigation and irrigation methods. It is typically used as herbicide in treatment of weeds in crops including corn, soybeans and sorghum. Globally, development of efficient and advance technology, rising agriculture industry primarily owing to increasing need of vegetables and fresh fruits, growing need for herbicides, and advantageous properties of metolachlor are the prime growth drivers of global metolachlor market. In addition, increase in adoption of metolachlor for application in newer industrial vertical, and emerging economies such as China, India and others, will create new opportunities for global metolachlor market. However, volatile prices and availability of raw materials, availability of substitute compounds, potential toxicity of metolachlor, and stringent government regulations are the key restraints for global metolachlor market.
