Powder injection molding (PIM) is an effective process that produces complex components of preferred shape in a variety of materials which include stainless steel, alloys and more which result in reduced secondary as well as assembly operations. The powder injection molding market is dominated by the applications from electronics, automotive and industrial applications. During the recent past, the market has expanded enormously to include a broad array of applications; the initial successes were in dental orthodontic brackets, watch cases, and firearms, but recently the technology has moved into higher performance, life-critical applications in dental implants, artificial joints, heart pacemakers, and aerospace jet engines. With further advancements on the technological front, the market is now set to open doors in the field of aluminum processing. Although Metal Injection Moulding has worked very well for many decades for a wide range of metals and alloys, the process has always proved to be unsuitable for aluminum.

Based on raw materials used, the PIM market is classified as Ceramic Injection Molding (CIM) and Metal Injection Molding. Metal injection moulding process (MIM) was developed in 1970’s by Raymond Wiech in the US. In this process, metal powder is combined with a thermoplastic resin called as binder, and the mixture is moulded according to the required shape by the same plastic injection moulding process. However, in 2016 electronics held the largest share in terms of revenue and is growing at a CAGR of 8.35% and projected to reach $755.4m by 2021.

Powder Injection Molding Market

The PIM market is scrutinized by segments including by technology, materials, application and geography. By materials used for this technology, the market is fragmented into steel, stainless steel, soft magnetic, titanium/tungsten alloys, ceramics and others. Furthermore, based on various applications wherein PIM find its use, the market is segmented into automotive, electronics, industrial, medical, consumer alliances, aerospace & defense and many more. The report also comprises of the region wise study of the global market including Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Rest of the World.

Stainless steel are poised to dominate the PIM market during 2016-2021. However, ceramics are comprehended to witness prominent CAGR of 9.4% during the same period. Escalating demand for automobile and electronics is propelling the growth of PIM market. Numerous parts manufactured from this material is preferred in automobile industry owing to its excellent properties.
