Fear
of safety and security of elderly people who stay at home and also in critical
situation has led to the introduction of PERS into the Market. PERS are the medical devices that are
used by individuals to call for any
emergency medical help. It connects to a 24 hr call center with a push of
button. It has three parts: Battery
operated transmitter which can be carried or worn (around the neck or on a
wrist band like watch or bracelet), console
or base station, monitoring station.
When a transmitter button is pressed, it immediately sends signal to console
which contacts the emergency care services or the user’s family members
informing to address the emergency.
PERS devices are segmented based on
- Landline
- Mobile
- Standalone devices
Since
the introduction of PERS in the market, technology has advanced rapidly and the
traditional home PERS is being tapped out and replaced by highly functional and
modern systems.
PERS market leaders in the landline and mobile based
segments Philips Lifeline, Health Watch Inc. Other major players that have had a considerable market share
are LifeAlert, Alert1, Tunstall, BayAlarm Medical and ADT Health. Though
PERS manufacturing companies have comparable product portfolio, there is a
small difference in quality, safety, reliability of the services provided by
them.
The increased
penetration of smart phone and widespread adoption of internet among people
have resulted in manufacturers shifting their focus towards mobile PERS. These devices also provide
a psychological advantage to few elderly people who feel embarrassed about
wearing a PERS pendant or wrist band in public due to fear of being branded as
weak.
The mobile PERS devices will be the major
growth segment as they are simple to set up and use and integrate into daily
life without any interruption as long as there is cellular service. However, limited
accessibility range of GPS in few regions can be a challenge for PERS
manufacturers.
