The automotive steering column
is a device intended primarily for connecting the steering wheel to the steering mechanism or transferring the driver's input torque from the steering wheel. The steering column consists of a collapsible housing containing a collapsible rotating shaft. The steering column is connected to the input shaft of the steering gear by a flexible joint. This allows the alignment, and reduces the transmission of road shocks back to the driver. Some of the steering columns have an intermediate shaft, which runs at about an oblique angle, from the column to the steering gear. Some manufacturers fit sensors and control units to the steering column, that provide information to steering control modules as part of an electric assisted or 4-wheel steering system. Steering columns have been segmented based on system type into Tilt and Telescope Adjustable Steering Columns, Rake Adjustable Steering Columns, Tilt-Adjustable Steering Columns, Active-Energy Absorbing Steering Columns and Touch Control Electronic Transmission Shifter Steering Columns. Among these systems adjustable steering columns, particularly tilt and telescopic adjustable columns have exhibited significant growth.
There is growing demand for steering columns that offer improved driver comfort. This has led to an enhanced product portfolio of adjustable steering columns by companies operating in this market. The different types of adjustable steering columns include power, rack and tilt adjustable steering columns. These columns can be shifted to provide improved comfort for the driver and thus have faced increased demand. These steering columns have been augmented in recent years with additional options such as auto calibration, positional memory and variable positioning speed thus leading to growing demand. The growing electronic presence in vehicles has resulted in growing deployment of auto calibration and variable speed in these steering columns, thereby further driving the growth. The modern cars are now equipped with power unit instead of the manual lever for adjusting the steering wheel position. It is called “Power one touch adjustability” for Tilt and Telescopic Steering Columns. The presence of this easily adjustable system has driven the market in recent years.
The power adjustable steering columns in particular have faced growing adoption. These systems have found increased utilization in electric vehicles due to their advanced positioning options and positional memory, thus allowing automatic changing positions based on external factors as well as driver comfort. These systems also offer improved safety and comfort in parking and narrow roads as they can be quickly adjusted. The increased demand for adjustable steering columns is projected to propel the steering column market
