Virtual Retinal Displays is a type of display technologies which projects a raster display directly onto the retina of the eye allowing the users to see the visuals directly in front of them floating in space. This is one of the latest technology and very few companies have commercialized their products such as HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift and so on. This technology will cause paradigm shift in conventional display technologies driven shift in consumer preference towards interacting with the virtual world.
This technology is considered to be one of the most promising future display technologies that can be used in various applications with major dominance expected from the gaming industry. As majority of developers working on this technology are startups, potential lucrativeness of this technology has attracted numerous investors to provide platforms for startups to build this technology. For instance, Avegant Technologies; has received nearly $24 million investment to develop next-generation wearable displays. Also, Starbreeze, creator of StarVR HMD, has invested $750 thousand into Freeform Labs Inc., a U.S. based company to build a virtual reality game, Elemen Terra. Fove Inc., a San Francisco based VR company, raised $11 million investment and expects to raise more funds to aid mass production of VR devices.
With investments flowing in, major investors include:
Technology giants such as Facebook, Google and Microsoft have also ventured into this line of business. Facebook acquired one of the pioneers of VR devices, Oculus, for $2 billion; Google invested in Magic Leap, an AR company, $542 million; Microsoft has developed “HoloLens” a head mounted display, enabling the user to interact with holograms in real world.
Also, there are numerous patents being filled as every company aims to pioneer this technology. Recently, Google filled a patent to use holograms in head mounted displays which would superimpose Computer Generated Imagery” over real world. Magna Electronics Inc, has received patent for incorporating Virtual Retinal Display with Vehicle Vision System. The company claims to provide safer driving environment and also enables bird’s eye view of the surrounding. These developments would begin a whole new era of virtual reality. This era will be one of new interaction designs, user behaviors, and experiences.
