With the recent buzz about advancements in Li-Fi it is firmly believed that it is likely to capture the Wi-Fi market in the near future. Li-Fi or Light Fidelity is a type wireless communication technology that is used to transmit high-speed data by visible light communication (VLC). Li-Fi was developed in 2011 by Harald Haas, a researcher from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He demonstrated his experiment by achieving a speed of 224 gigabits per second in his lab by using light from a single LED.
The Li-Fi technology is an advanced form of Morse Code which is a method of transferring any code by combination of short and long sound and light signals. Li-Fi uses VLC which is a medium that uses visible light between 400 and 800 terahertz.
Apart from potentially faster speed Li-Fi has multiple other benefits over Wi-Fi. Li-Fi offers a more secure network as light cannot pass through walls; this also minimizes the interference between devices. Li-Fi is also useful in electromagnetic sensitive areas such as in aircraft cabins, hospitals and nuclear power plants without producing electromagnetic interference. Li-Fi technology uses visible light spectrum and can thus communicate data and unravel capacity which is 10,000 times greater than that accessible within the radio spectrum. The present visible light spectrum is abundant, free and unlicensed; this will help in mitigating the radio frequency spectrum crunch effect.
Even after all these benefits Li-Fi probably cannot completely replace the Wi-Fi systems in the coming years; yet both can be used simultaneously to provide an efficient and secure network. The main factor hindering the adoption of Li-Fi is the existing infrastructure for Wi-Fi networks. Therefore the main stress is on developing technology to retrofit the existing devices to work with Li-Fi technology. Research institutes are working on this. With the increasing count of successful research work soon it will be possible to fit microchip in all potential illumination devices and combine illumination and wireless transmission functionalities.
