3D printing (3DP) or additive manufacturing (AM) or rapid prototyping technology is gaining importance in various industries including healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, art and education. This technology is used to create structures which can function similar to living tissues to replace injured or diseased ones. The wake forest scientists have printed ear, bone and muscle structures by using 3D bioprinting. Bio-degradable, plastic-like materials are used in this technology to form the tissue where outer shape of an organ is formed that protects the cells from damage. The tissue allows nutrients and oxygen from the body to diffuse into the structures which promotes cell growth. Other benefits, which can be derived from 3D bioprinting, include developing high-throughput 3D-bioprinted tissue models for drug discovery and toxicology.
