Snapshot of the Aircraft Lighting Systems Market Overview and Developments.

Published By: IndustryARC Published On : 18-May-2016

Aircraft lighting systems provide illumination for both interior and exterior uses. These systems facilitate minimum visibility requirements for approaching obstacles and allow the pilot to immediately identify the visibility distances in unfavourable weather conditions. The classification of aircraft lighting is done into three segments which include: exterior lighting, flight compartment lighting, passenger compartment lighting, service lighting and emergency lighting.

Interior lights:

Interior lights give illumination to the cabins. Commercial aircrafts generally consists of independent lighting systems for main cabin and passengers, and emergency lighting systems on the floor of the aircraft to facilitate the passengers of the aircraft during the emergency aid. Interior lighting provides illumination for instruments, cockpits, cabins and other section occupied by passengers in an aircraft.

Exterior Lighting:

Exterior lights are required for operations during night time and during specialized flying operations. These include wing inspection lights, position lights, anti-collision lights, landing lights, taxi lights and others. They provide illumination during operations such as landing, inspection of icing conditions and safety from mid-air collisions.

Emergency lighting system:

Emergency lighting systems is classified into Interior emergency lighting system and external emergency lighting system.

Interior emergency lighting systems depends on the aircrafts size. The aircraft has white floor track lighting with red lighting. The red lighting is used to mark the location of the aircrafts emergency exits.

An aircraft consists of four exterior emergency lights, one at the cabin door, two lights forward and one at the exit of the overwing.

Over the past few years there have been significant developments in aircraft lighting systems. The industry has witnessed development from high energy consuming florescent light to high efficient LED lights. Lighting technology also improved from simple switches to intelligent lighting controllers. These have optimized the design of lighting systems and have created environments which meet the visual requirement standards. Installation of LED lights in cabins and cockpits has greatly improved the lifespan of the lighting systems and has also increased the power efficiency and control. These lights also provided with features of low voltage driving, avoid radiation, high luminous efficiency, environmental protection and colour changing flexibility. There have been many improvements made in the lighting mode, functions and colour with the application of intelligent lighting and LED lighting such as adjusting the lightings according to the requirements of the passengers. These lights are being installed to scare birds from aircraft.
