Vein illumination device is a biomedical device which with the aid of near infrared light illuminates veins on the surface of the skin, hence making them visible. This device also aids in determining the quality and the blood flow in the vein. This device is majorly used to identify veins especially in cases wherein the diameter of vein is small and proper identification of veins for applications such as blood donation, sample collection and so on. This device is majorly used by various end-users which include hospitals, nursing homes, blood donation camps, and so on. One of the major factors driving this market includes rise in venous leg ulcers.
Venous ulcers are wounds which occur due to improper functioning of venous valves. These ulcers are most commonly occurred in legs mostly above the ankle. They are the major occurrence of chronic wounds, occurring in 70% to 90% of leg ulcer cases. This is majorly caused by low extremity venous disease wherein this affects varicose veins leading to chronic venous insufficiency. In some cases wherein this condition is extreme leads to surgical removal of varicose veins by a method known as Phlebectomy. Phlebectomy is surgical removal of varicose veins through small skin incisions.
Phlebectomy involves removal of varicosities with the aid of hooks or hemostats, and the veins are generally ligated. However, this method is generally very painful. Hence advancement in technology has led to rise in development of an alternative, which is called as ”Trasilluminated powered phlebectomy”. The technique involves placing an irrigated transilluminator into the varicosities and a powered suction resector. These are usually introduced through skin incision. When activated, this technique aids in direct vision of the affected veins while facilitating suctioning of the vein into resector. This technique is similar to the traditional Phlebectomy technique. However, one of the major advantages of this technique is that, this technique helps in drastic reduction in the number of incisions as compared to that of traditional Phlebectomy technique. Hence, vein illuminators are increasingly used for transilluminator application in Trasilluminated powered phlebectomy process.
