Since beginning, the healthcare transportation services sector is the mainstay for the healthcare segment. Patient Transportation is very crucial for ensuring that they receive adequate treatment in time. However, the patient transportation from their home to hospital in case of non-emergency services is not well evolved. There are no proper dedicated facilities for the patients and poor transportation is often quoted as the main reason for missed or rescheduled appointments.
The car rental and cab service providers have identified this gap and are engaged in collaborating with medical service providers to provide medical transportation. This initiative involves cab services providers to offer non-emergency patient transportation from their home to hospitals or clinics.
Recently, Uber collaborated with the largest non-profit healthcare system in Maryland and Washington D.C.; MedStar Health. Under this collaboration patients get an option of booking an Uber cab from MedStarHealth.org. Moreover, they can also set a reminder to notify them about their appointment and hour before the scheduled appointment.
Uber is also partnering with Hackensack University Medical Center to provide patient rides. Uber will pick patients from the university medical center and drive them home; HUMC will partly pay the fare.
Apart from Uber, Lyft is also venturing into non-emergency medical transportation segment. Lyft has partnered with National Medtrans Network to provide cab services to elderly patients. Nation Medtrans books nearly 2500 cabs every week using Lyft.
These cab services, if integrated properly in the healthcare transportation services can substantially improve the healthcare services. Cabs can be used for medication delivery and compliance checks, non-emergency transport for uninjured patients and after discharge ride among many other benefits. Technically, Uber cabs are cheaper than any ambulance.
The healthcare transportation services have a huge potential in the coming years. According, to a recent study by IndustryARC, the global healthcare transportation market is estimated to reach $93.2 billion by 2021.
