Green Coating Resins are all Set to Shape the Coating Industry in the Near Future

Coating resins refer to a wide category of chemical compounds that are basic components in products like paints and coatings. These materials are used to provide protective layers for a wide variety of objects and provide surfaces to impart resistance from corrosion, weather, stain and hardness. Coating resins are applied on wooden floors, decks, concrete porches, garages and metal surfaces. Additionally, they are applied on machinery, automotive, marine industry. The major driver for this industry is the demand from end user industries. Various polymers are used for coating applications. Solvent-borne paints are the most vital field of application for acrylic resin made by solution polymerization.

Various factors are driving the inclination towards bio based products. Consumers are expressing improved attentiveness in green products, healthier lifestyles and restoring the environment. Consequently, businesses are reacting to government agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and consumer demands for more eco-friendly products instigating the use of green resins instead of conventional coating materials. Coatings are based on polymers such as epoxies, polyesters, vinyl esters, polyurethanes, polyureas, and others. In wastewater applications, the most common coatings systems are based on epoxy, polyurethane, vinyl ester, and acrylic polymers.

A distinctive factor of resins that appears in the process of manufacturing a product is that, an irrevocable chemical reaction takes place due to the influence of UV or as a consequence of amalgamating two reactive components. The growth of biobased resins encompasses numerous approaches. Parts of traditional building blocks of a resin is replaced by identical building blocks based on biomass. For instance, glycerol that is released in the production of biodiesel can be transformed into acrylic acid, or propylene glycol in order to produce epoxy, acrylic, and unsaturated polyester resins, respectively. Additionally, it is also possible to make new building blocks for resins from biomass. Some of these examples include, epoxidised vegetable oils for epoxy resins, phenols from lignin or sugar derivatives such as polyol in polyurethane resins.

There are various manufacturers who are focussing on producing green resins pertaining to coating applications. For instance, alkyd resin is being developed based on sugar and vegetable fatty acid derivatives. Moreover, companies are also developing new biobased epoxy resins for products such as cast floors or coatings based on epoxidised oils and dimerised fatty acids. Hence, green coating resins are emerging as a perfect alternative to the conventional coating resins. Moreover, the increasingly stringent environmental regulations, intensifying market competition, continuous innovation in formulation, technology and product development collectively promote the growth of bio based resins used in coating applications. Asia Pacific region will continue to be the world's prominent consumer of coatings through 2021. It is projected to account for almost half of global industry demand by 2021, due to which the international players continue to grow their presence in the region.
