Emerging Trend Towards Veganism is all Set to Drive Calcium Supplements Market

From 2012 to 2016 the number vegans have increased tremendously. In Australia the number of adults having a veganism course of diet has increased from 9% to 12% of total population whereas in Europe this number has achieved a growth of as much as 360% from 2010. Most people adopt veganism for maintaining a low fat & healthy diet and weight loss reasons. Vegan’s food diet does not include dairy products, meat, eggs and animal derived ingredients which are generally rich in calcium. 

These types of food diet are generally adopted by women who are in concern with fat loss hence the risk of bone fracture and hip fracture remains high among them. It is recommended that women above the age of 45 should strictly take calcium supplements or calcium fortified food items in their regular diet. New Zealand is considered to be another major region for vegans. Since 2010 the number of vegans has increased in this country has rose to 23% of the total population. Teenagers and adults are even shifting to this vegan trend. Men who are vegans have increased from 5.7% to 9.3% between these years.

The intake of calcium in vegans is less than non-vegans as they consume more plant products containing oxalic and phytic acids. As a result the risk of bone fracture and coeliac diseases is high due to which they will be in need to depend on more calcium supplements for maintaining healthy life. Tricalcium citrate and calcium carbonate are two generally used salts of calcium used in food fortification and supplements. Hence consumption of tricalcium citrate which contains around 27% of calcium salt is projected to increase which have good absorption, high solubility in low pH and neutral taste properties in comparison with other salts of calcium.
