Japan’S Target for Autonomous Vehicle is Rising the Need of Mobile Mapping Systems

Published By: IndustryARC Published On : 20-Dec-2017

15 Japanese automakers companies such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan and others have come together with Mitsubishi Electric Corp. for designing high-definition 3D maps to assist safe autonomous driving. The company also aims to provide additional information such as noise barriers; lane divisions and their widths; surface conditions; location of traffic lights; road signs and many more feature to improve the safety of autonomous driving. Recently, Mitsubishi Electric has introduced a newer version of its vehicle mounted mobile mapping systems named; MMS-G220. The MMS system introduced in the market makes use of combination of various lidar, cameras and other sensors along with GPS antennas based on the application of use.

The upgraded MMS also makes use of the laser scanning point cloud technique for gathering 3D positioning data of roadside facilities such as road signage, lane marking and traffic signals. The data that is so collected is identified by X, Y and Z coordinates along with the camera images captured at the same time. Further the images are synchronized with the coordinates for providing the 3D maps with the accuracy upto 10cm of the objects upto 7 meters. These data of 3D maps are supplied to the autonomous driving cars, which in turn increases the efficiency and maintains control over the sensors which are responsible for executing task during bad weather conditions. Thereby, the applications of the 3D maps created using mobile mapping systems are used for addressing the safety concerns with respect to autonomous driving cars by providing detailed navigation systems. Hence, applications of MMS for the autonomous driving are among the various areas of usage of the 3D maps such as, inspection of tunnel linings, surface road conditions and others.

As Japanese Government has invested on projects to have driverless vehicles on the road in 2020, this factor in-turn has become one of the major opportunities for mobile mapping manufacturers such as Mitsubishi Electric to provide centimeter-scale positioning information to the car navigation systems.
