Herbicides are chemical compounds that are used to manipulate or control undesirable vegetation and destroy unwanted plants (terrestrial or aquatic) called weeds. The most frequent application of herbicides occurs in row-crop farming, where they are used before or during planting to maximize crop productivity by minimizing other vegetation. They also may be applied to crops which are under fall in order to improve harvesting. Herbicides are used in forest management to prepare logged areas for replanting. In suburban and urban areas, herbicides are applied to lawns, parks, golf courses and other areas. Herbicides are also used in water bodies to control aquatic weeds that impede irrigation withdrawals or interfere with industrial and recreational uses of water.

Herbicides fall into two broad categories: inorganic (e.g., copper sulfate, sodium chlorate, and sodium arsenide) and organic (e.g., chlorophenoxy compounds, dinitrophenols, bipyridyl compounds, carbonates, and amide herbicides). Historically, inorganic compounds were the first available and the first used. There has been over a long continuous effort to develop herbicide compounds that are more selective—that affect weeds, as opposed to desirable plants.

Herbicides are used to control growth of weeds on various crop types including cereals & grains, oilseeds & pulses, fruits & vegetables, and other crop types.

The use of herbicides is increasing day by day. This is because any other alternative control measures do not provide an effective and economic substitute for herbicides in many situations. The efficiency and safety of herbicides are greatly influenced by soil and climate.

There are multiple evidences in the agricultural literature stating that herbicides are generally more effective and less expensive than other methods of weed control. The advantages of herbicides are greatest in temperate areas with cool and moist summers, and mild winters which support the year-round weed growth. Moist soil conditions and high humidity also reduce the value of cultivation; thus controlling weeds by speeding up the microbial degradation is important.
