Ampicillin, a semi-synthetic derivative of penicillin, causes cell death by interfering directly with bacterial cell wall synthesis and indirectly by initiating the release of enzymes that further aids in altering the cell wall. Presence of an amino group is the only difference between ampicillin and penicillin. An amino group in ampicillin aids penetration through the outer membrane of gram-positive and certain gram-negative bacteria. Ampicillin finds use as an antibiotic in preventing and treating a number of bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, meningitis, salmonella infections, urinary tract infections and endocarditis. Ampicillin is also used in treatment of group B streptococcal infection in newborns. Ampicillin was the first 'broad spectrum' type of penicillin having activity against gram positive bacteria.

The global ampicillin market
is driven by factors such as new product innovations and increasing R&D investments by major players. Moreover, regulatory concerns to control the antibiotic resistance problem are also expected to drive the global ampicillin market. Rising geriatric population is one of the key drivers for the growth of the global ampicillin market. Moreover, factors such as rising prevalence of infectious diseases and increasing demand for effective antibiotic drugs especially in the emerging economies across Asia Pacific and Latin America are expected to bolster the ampicillin market during the forecast period. However, the key hindrance to the global ampicillin market is the emergence of drug resisting microorganisms.

The global ampicillin market is classified into applications as follows:
  • Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Meningitis
  • Salmonella Infections
  • Endocarditis
  • Others (Group 3 Streptococcal Infections, etc.).

The global ampicillin market is further bifurcated on the basis of Intake method into:
  • By Mouth
  • By Injection into a Muscle
  • Intravenously

On the basis of target bacteria type, the global ampicillin market is further segmented into:
  • Gram Positive Bacteria
  • Gram Negative Bacteria

Lastly, the global ampicillin market is bifurcated by regions into North America, Asia Pacific (APAC), Europe and Rest of the World (RoW). Asia Pacific is expected to lead the market in terms of consumption and the trend is expected to continue over the forecast period. North America is forecast to witness a healthy average growth rate over the forecast period.
