A 3D display is used to display a three dimensional view of a picture or environment. The key difference between a 3D display and a standard display is that depth can also be seen which otherwise could not in a standard display. The requirement for 3D displays has been increasing steadily over the few years primarily as a means of product differentiation. TV manufacturers such as Samsung and LG have brought in 3D displays as the next line in new viewing technology. This technology coupled with gaming applications will tend to see quite some traction in the gaming sector. The cost for 3D displays is currently high, however, this is true in the case of any product which is sold in low numbers in comparison to its predecessors. Further to this, customers do not find the need to pay a higher amount for 3D displays when there is still a large volume of content which needs to be 3D enabled. Filmmakers across the globe, however, are now tending to release films along with a 3D version which, coupled with the growth of this market could address the aforementioned issue of the availability of 3D content.

Future applications of 3D display also involve its use in healthcare and industrial applications. A 3D display would be able to show the user depth in the image which is being viewed which is extremely important for such applications. A doctor may be able to view to what level an organ has been affected by cancer and not rely on just 2D imaging technology to estimate these data points. Likewise, the industrial sector can use 3D displays to view a 3D model of any product that is being manufactured and accordingly view how the different parts of the product would perform under various conditions.
