Acephate is an organophosphate insecticide which is commercially sold as a powder. It can also be present in an aerosol form and accordingly either be sprayed over tress or vegetation or can be mixed as a powder along with the soil where the vegetation is present. Acephate is ideal for attacking highly resistant mites which would otherwise not be affected by ordinary pesticides. Acephate is also used at recreational centers such as golf couses, football grounds or any large green filled area. The powder is spread across the field and ensures that there is no infestation. Acephate is mainly used for agriculture in the form of seed treatment for crops. The increasing focus on agricultural growth stemming from an increasing population around the world is a key driver for the use of acephate. With the many advantages of acephate however, there are certain challenges as well. The extended use of acephate releases toxic gases which are harmful to humans. Acephate has the tendency to emit toxic fumes which when inhaled can result in irritation of the eye and skin. Hence, the exposure of acephate has to be done in the absence of human contact or should be done with proper protection.

The APAC region is currently accounting for the largest share of acephate being used globally. This can be understood from the fact that new land areas are being captured for agricultural purposes each year in this region thereby making this a high growth region for agriculture. China is the largest importer of acephate as on date. Africa is expected to become a leading contributor by the end of the forecast period because of the potential of farming in this region over the next few years. Some European countries have banned the use of acephate owing to the toxicity associated with it.
