Rubbers are materials associated with the property of elasticity. With the chemical name of alkyl acrylate copolymer (ACM), acrylic rubber is a type of rubber that exhibits useful properties inclusive of ozone, heat and oil resistance. Acrylic rubber can endure a temperature of about 180 degree centigrade in oil or dry heat. The trade name for acrylic rubber is Hytemp and acrylic rubber is categrorized as a specialty rubber. Acrylic rubber is a saturated rubber. Acrylic rubber is made from the emulsion polymerization of several acrylic monomers. One of the main applications of acrylic rubber has been for automotive seals and hoses owing to the need for oil resistant rubber materials. With an increase in production of automotives coupled with the need for long lasting products, there is an increase in the demand for acrylic rubber. In keeping with the need for low fuel consumption and increase in the combustion temperature in the engine compartment, the market for acrylic rubber is expected to grow. Other applications include oil seals, gaskets and fuel oil components.

Some of the disadvantages of acrylic rubber include their inability to be resistant enough to acids and bases and also to moisture. These disadvantages, while not so critical, restrict the application areas for acrylic rubber and this impacts the growth of the market. Other factors include acrylic rubber’s low permeability in the case of gases.
