A passive infrared sensor is a sensor that can produce light and then detect the motion of an infrared emitting source. An infrared emitting source would be any object radiating heat. Because of this feature, passive infrared sensor are suitable for security applications, especially for perimeter security wherein the sensors can be used to track the motion of any individual or any object radiating heat within the proximity of a building. These sensors can be integrated into cameras, temperature sensors and fire detection systems depending on the requirement of these sensors. The passive infrared sensor utilizes minimal power and can operate within a high degree of accuracy. The market as a whole is expected to grow with a positive growth rate during the forecast period. Passive infrared sensors have been used for quite some time in North America and hence have quite a high contribution to the overall market. The APAC region as of 2015 had the lowest contribution but is expected to record the highest CAGR during the forecast period. As such, numerous companies operating in this market are eyeing the APAC region as the next region for them to witness good revenue generation.

Security was a key application for the passive infrared sensor market, however, electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets are being fitted with passive infrared sensors. Further to this, medical equipment in the healthcare segment are also utilizing passive infrared sensors for localized heat detection in parents. Passive infrared sensors are suited for applications wherein the object under observation is moving at a low speed. For objects moving at higher speeds, alternative sensors are available and at a lower cost than passive infrared sensors.

Companies operating in the passive infrared sensor market realize the need to develop more accurate sensors with a greater reading range and more importantly, better ability to read objects moving at faster speeds. The potential for these sensors to be used across a wide variety of products is large. There have already been examples of organizations investing hundreds of millions of dollars over the last few years into the R&D of these sensors.
