A chloride sensor is a sensor which is used to measure the chloride content in a given sample. This is done through the measurement of the ions present in the sample. The chloride ions are identified by a polymer membrane through which chloride molecules penetrate the membrane and are trapped. Through this process, the electronic charge of the polymer as a whole is changed and thus a corresponding electrical signal is produced which can be used to determine the content of chlorine in the given sample. The signal output can be taken out digitally or through an analog device which is then mapped against previous and measured readings of chloride identification. The technique is a non-invasive technique for the measurement of chloride in sample. 

A fluorescent chloride sensor operates on the principle that should a fluorescent indicator dye molecule react with a chloride ion, the binding of the ions will cause a change in the fluorescent properties of the dye thereby changing color wherein the intensity of the color change will determine the content of chlorine present in the sample.

Fluoroscent chloride sensors are increasingly being used across a wide variety of applications, especially when it comes to water treatment applications. Scientists around the world are looking at what the chlorine content is across various samples of water to determine the quality of the water. As such, these sensors offer the advantage of providing a visible indication of chloride content in water and can be used across different parts of a water body. Looking at the healthcare segment, the use of fluorescent chloride sensors can be used to diagnose cystic fibrosis in patients. A key advantage for the healthcare segment again is that it is a non-invasive method of measuring chloride content which is essential for the healthcare industry.
