An insulator is a device which is used to create an insulation between two conductors. Depending on the type of application for which power transmission is taking place, the insulators can also be used as a means of mechanical support for power carrying cables. In the initial years, the insulators which were used for high voltage applications would often have to be replaced because of wear and tear of the insulators. Today, there are multiple composites of these insulators which can be used thereby extending their life period.
