Medical courier is a service that ensure safe and timely transfer of medical equipment, reports or organs and specimen between hospitals or between labs and hospitals. Given the criticality of what is being transferred, quick and safe transportation of the items is of paramount importance. Route optimization is extremely vital in medical couriers as time of essence. Samples can deteriorate and be unusable after a certain window of time has lapsed. With the success rate of organ transplants increasing rapidly, the need to be able to transport a donated organ to the recepient safely, securely and in time is extremely crucial. More often than not, the organ donor may not be in the same city limits as the recepient. This is another factor that the medical courier market has the potential to address. The need for effective delivery of samples to and from labs and pharmaceutical and biotech companies is another factor driving the growth of this market.

However, the tendency to actually choose a medical courier company to transport medical packages has not yet gained enough traction. Hospitals tend to trust their own services and this could hinder the growth of this market. There is also a need for certain standards and requirements to be met when transporting medical goods and not all companies are able to adhere to these standards. This can further hamper the growth of this market.

There are a few companies such as Dynamex that offers services that are compliant with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements.
