Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is the diester formed from terephthalic acid and methanol. It is a white solid that melts to give a distillable colorless liquid and is used primarily to make linear, saturated polyester resins, fibers and films by blending with glycols. DMT is chiefly used for the production of intermediate polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer also known as reactor-grade polyester or PET melt-phase resin. PET engineering resins are formed from recycled postindustrial and postconsumer materials.

Approximately more than 60% of DMT formed globally has its use in production of PET polymer for polyester fibers and approximately 31% in the manufacture of PET solid-state resin for bottles and for packaging purpose. A very minor portion find its use in fabrication of polyester resins for varnishes, films, and adhesives, making of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and production of other chemicals like benzocaine, terephthalohydroxamic acid, terephthaldehyde, terephthalamide, cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), terephthaloyl chloride and copolyester-ether elastomers etc.

The consumption of bottled water, soft drinks and other premium beverages has increased massively worldwide during last decade and thus showing the proportional increase in dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) usage witnessing the future growth of market.

This report provides information on dimethyl terephthalate market size for the year 2014-2016, and forecast of the same for year 2021. It also focuses on market drivers, challenges, restraints, market dynamics, growth indicators, competitive landscape, potential growth opportunities and other key aspects with respect to dimethyl terephthalate market.

Dimethyl Terephthalate Market

Asia is the largest DMT consuming region and expected to account for about 85% of the world's DMT volume growth in the next five years. In addition, the low feedstock prices are also expected to drive the growth of the global dimethyl terephthalate market in future.

In this report global DMT market is divided into upstream products, downstream products and region as follows:
  • Market is segmented based on upstream/downstream products - methanol, terephthalic acid, and xylenes-mixed xylenes etc. being upstream products. Polybutylene phthalate and polyethylene terephthalate are downstream products
  • This report is further segmented based on potential markets for dimethyl terephthalate. A detailed analysis by region – United States, Europe, Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Rest of the World (RoW), has been provided in this report
