Diketene or ethanone is an organic compound produced by dimerization of ketene and belongs to oxetane family. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor and exposure may cause irritation to eyes, nose and throat. Diketene is produced by various methods, one of the method used in industry is by dehydrating acetic acid at high temperature (700 to 750 degree Celsius) in presence of triethyl ether as a catalyst. Diketene is used for manufacturing of derivatives such as acetoacetates, alkylamides, acrylic acid esters arylamides and other Diketene derivatives.

Applications of Diketene are as follows:
  • Pharmaceutical industry, Diketene is used in the manufacturing of wide range of antimicrobial and chemotherapeutic products. In synthesizing new compounds, qualitative and quantitative analysis of drugs
