Rice milling produces husk which is later burnt to produce rice husk ash (RHA). RHA is major threat to environment and disposal of is a major issue. It can be used as a fuel but the accessibility is limited as it involves emission of pollutants. Taking these things into account various research had been carried out using these materials as a replacement of Portland cement or as an additive material in concrete manufacture. Pozzolanas are an important ingredient in the production of alternative cementing materials to Polartland cement. RHA contains compounds like silica and carbon as major constituents in it. Pozzolanic activity depends on silica content, silica crystallization phase and surface area of ash particles. Blended cement produced by RHA is now fulfilling the increasing need of building materials. These are mainly used replacement of silica fumes in manufacture of low cost concrete block. Also used in the manufacture of refractory bricks.
Major factor driving the growth of is use of these as silica source. Due to large silica content present in it, extraction of silica is economical. The growing demand for fine amorphous silica in the production of concrete and cement used in bridges, nuclear plants and few others propels the demand. In spite of the fact that RHA finds its biggest application in construction industry, constraints to this market arises due to health issues on using crystalline ash and hence amorphous RHA has a great potential of use in these area.
