A smart sensor is a platform of various capabilities such as signal amplification and conditioning, analog-to-digital conversion, microcomputers, data storage devices, and bus communication. A smart sensor platform is used for predictive maintenance and instrumentation and to monitor and communicate the condition of key parameters more efficiently, such as equipment vibration. A generic smart sensor platform supports the interface between different hardware and a communication need of multiple positions and inertial sensors, with the help of point-to-point technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth or RFID.

In the aerospace domain, smart sensors can be employed for applications such as monitoring cracks, strain, vibrations, pressure, and temperature. In addition, for the above purposes, smart sensors need to monitor rotating machinery, aircraft wings, fuselage, stabilizer, slats, flats, spoilers, elevator, rudder, cockpit, and engines.
