Chloromethane belongs to a group of organic compounds called haloalkanes. It is an extremely flammable colorless gas which in abundance is highly toxic. Chloromethane is synthesized by boiling a mixture of sodium chloride, sulphuric acid and methanol. Significant amount of chloromethane is produced naturally in the water bodies such as oceans by the reaction of sunlight with chlorine and biomass in sea foam. It is majorly used in manufacturing silicone polymers, butyl rubber and in refining petroleum.

Chloromethane was initially used as a common refrigerant, but was discontinued because of its flammability and toxicity. Due to its considerable toxic effects, it is no longer used in consumer products. Different types of chloromethanes such as methyl chloride, methylene chloride, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride are produced in the industry. Methyl chloride is the largest segment and is also the most important type of chloromethane, largely used in medical and pharmaceutical industries.

The chloromethane market report splits the market into two broad segments namely market by type and market by application. Each segment is further divided into sub-segments to offer the overall analysis of the market. These segments are subsequently followed by market segmentation by geography; regions including Americas, Europe, APAC and RoW are studied under the scope of report.

The market by application will witness a significant growth in silicone industry. It is anticipated to be the fastest growing application segment during the forecast period due to the rising demand from medical and personal care industries. Adding to this the growing household incomes and an ever-expanding middle class segment in Asia Pacific and Rest of the World (RoW) are contributing to the increase in demand for high quality products containing silicone. China emerged out to be the most attractive market in Asia Pacific for chloromethane with a considerable potential for huge growth in certain end-user industries such as automotive and pharmaceuticals.

Chloromethane Market

The Americas Region held the highest share of XX% in 2015 and is estimated to reach $xxbillion by 2021 growing at a CAGR of XX%. Europe will closely follow America in the forecast period; however, APAC will emerge out to be the market leader by 2021.

These companies are steadily focusing on expanding their production capacity to achieve a competitive advantage and improve customer service. The huge investments in R&D, followed by large expansions were the most preferred strategies by the top players in 2015.

The Asia-Pacific region appeared to be the driving factor for this market, with BRIC nations as leading region for the consumption of chloromethane. China was the largest market; the growth in Chinese market was attributed to the increased demand from the allied industries and large population needs. The other BRIC economies such as India, Brazil, and Russia also witnessed an upsurge in the market.

The major companies in this market include:
  • AkzoNobel N.V (The Netherlands)
  • The Dow Chemical (U.S.)
  • Kem One (France)
