An alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test
is a blood test that measures the amount of AFP present in blood. It’s usually part of what’s called a triple screen or quad screen in the second trimester of pregnancy. The AFP protein found in humans is encoded by the AFP gene that is located on chromosome 4. The yolk sac and immature liver of an unborn baby produce AFP which then circulates through the fetal and maternal blood. Infants usually have higher levels of AFP protein which falls to normal adult level by the end of first year. AFP tests are commercially available and widely used for testing various cancer related test. AFP market is expected to increase due to increasing awareness towards cancer and globally increasing incidences of cancer and related illnesses which is also driving cancer diagnostic segment globally and is growing exponentially with huge expenditure being done on research and development activities being carried out to discover new techniques and specific antigens to further enhance the treatment mode
