Over the last decade, there has been an increase in the number of manufacturing plants which have been setup especially in the APAC region. This can be understood from the fact that a number of small scale industries have grown in order to support many of the larger manufacturing units. In all of these cases, safety has always been of prime importance and one of the key aspects to ensure proper safety was to have explosion proof lighting installed in all of these locations. Explosion proof lighting has become extremely important considering the gases that are emitted during numerous processes which can easily be ignited by the lamps in the factories. Furthermore, the luminance that is emitted by a lamp for a factory is a lot higher than what is emitted for residential or enterprise applications. These lamps also are operational almost twenty-four hours a day seven days a week thereby making them extremely hot during operation. The fumes from the lamps themselves can become very hot and ignite the already flammable gases which may be present in the room.

A more pertinent industry which requires explosion proof lighting is the petroleum and oil industry where all and every precaution is taken to ensure that there is no possibility of a spark taking place. Everything from ensuring there is no spark from a moving vehicle to ensuring that there is no spark from any machinery is taken along with the installation of explosion proof lighting. The manufacturers of explosion proof lighting have invested heavily in R&D to always look at better and effective ways of lighting. The use of LEDs has allowed manufacturers to provide smaller form factors whilst still ensuring high lighting effectiveness. The petroleum and oil industry will continue to be the largest end-user segment for explosion proof lighting till well beyond the forecast period.
