Waterborne coatings are one class protective coatings which has VOC emission level below regulatory limits. The use of water-borne protective coatings is increasing due to legislation on the emission of solvents from paints. These coatings possess excellent properties like stain resistance, corrosion resistance, hardness and flexibility. Also these coating have excellent solvent and humidity resistance and high gloss. These coating involves reduced fire hazard and soap and water cleanup. These are comparatively safe when compared to other type of coatings since low level of flammable and toxic solvents. Some among the common resins include epoxies, alkyds, acrylics and polyurethanes. Applications of water borne coatings include automotive, general appliances, wood, plastics and few others. Water soluble epoxy esters and alkyds are used in automotive components coatings. Growth of these coatings for usage in automotive plastics and business machines are expected. Urethanes and acrylics are best suited for this field due to their air-bake and low bake capabilities.

Based on the resins commercially available, this market is classified as acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy, vinyls and others. These coatings usually contain 10% to 20%VOC’s by volume when compared to solvent-borne coatings that contains more than 70% VOC’s. Hence water-borne coatings are less stressful to environment and are less of a fire hazard which drives the market for waterborne coatings further.

Waterborne Coatings Market

The waterborne coatings market is scrutinized by segments including resin, application and geography. Based on various applications wherein laminating adhesives find its use, the market is segmented into architectural, automotive, industrial, wood and others. The report also comprises of the region wise study of the global market including Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Rest of the World.

Architectural segment is poised to dominate this market during 2016-2021. However, automotive as well as packaging are comprehended to witness prominent CAGR of 5.79% and 5.70% respectively during the same period. Escalating demand for corrosion resistant and low VOC emissive coatings are propelling the growth of waterborne coatings market.
